Study on improving the water environment by using a distributed wastewater treatment system in the Ha Long Bay area in Vietnam

Chodai Co., Ltd. and Seiwa Denko Co., Ltd. have agreed to jointly implement a feasibility study on ODA and project formulation and commercialization through improving the water environment by using a distributed wastewater treatment system in the Ha Long Bay area in Vietnam.

The study qualified for the “Study on Economic Partnership Projects in Developing Countries in Fiscal Year 2013” under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. The work started already in October and is scheduled to be implemented over approximately 5 months until the end of February next year.

Rapid development in the Ha Long Bay area where the project is located along with economic growth has resulted in increased environmental problems such as water pollution and degradation of the natural environment. Ha Long Bay also has almost 600 tourist boats and many areas where the residents live on the water without proper wastewater treatment facilities, which has seriously polluted local waters. Although discussions with the Ministry of Planning and Management on the introduction of a sewage treatment system in Ha Long city are currently progressing, financial problems have put the project on hold.

Septic tanks which are widely used by households are not sufficient for wastewater treatment and suffer from lack of regular maintenance, which has resulted in accumulated sludge, deterioration and partial dysfunction.

Against this background, the plan is to significantly contribute to the improvement of the wastewater treatment system in Ha Long Bay through the introduction of a new sanitation model involving a distributed wastewater treatment system consisting of composting toilets for human waste and new greywater purification systems.

In this project, Chodai is responsible for feasibility studies on the formulation of ODA and private projects through the collection of local information, market research and the establishment of business models, while Seiwa Denko is to verify the applicability of the products and technology for the composting toilets and new purification systems through site verification tests.

Chodai is cooperating with the authorities and private companies in Quang Ninh Province, Da Nang and Hue in order to introduce composting toilets and spread similar competitive technology developed by Japanese small and medium-sized enterprises for infrastructure use in overseas markets. There will be more opportunities to create new projects and improve their feasibility by combining Japanese technology with Chodai’s project management capabilities.
