Chodai signs construction supervision contract for Gebze-Orhangazi-Izmir Motorway (Izmit Bay Bridge included) in Turkey

On May 3rd, the joint venture between Chodai Co., Ltd., leading Turkish construction consulting company Yuksel Proje, and Emay signed a construction supervision contract with the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications / General Directorate of Highways (KGM) for Consultancy Services during the Construction Period of Construction of Gebze-Orhangazi-Izmir (Izmit  Bay Crossing and Connection Roads included) Motorway with Build-Operate-Transfer Model, Operation and Transfer Project (total contract amount: 160,000,000 Turkish Lira (approx. 8.83 billion yen), total construction period: 87 months).

Chodai was awarded the project through international competitive bidding in which several other multinational consortia participated by submitting competing technical proposals, which confirms the worldwide recognition of Chodai’s suspension bridge design and construction supervision technology. Chodai again had the opportunity to showcase its technical expertise on a state-of-the-art project, previously demonstrated through projects such as the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.

This project involves the construction supervision of the Gebze-Orhangazi-Izmir Motorway (L = 420km) which will connect Turkey’s largest city Istanbul with the third-largest city Izmir. Chodai is responsible for construction supervision of the Izmit Bay Bridge (L = 2,907m, center span L = approx. 1,550m), the world's fourth largest suspension bridge by central span length which is to be built over Izmit Bay in the Sea of Marmara.

Through the cooperation between the multinational consortium NOMAYG JV, the BOT concessionaire of the project, and IHI Infrastructure Systems Co., Ltd. / ITOCHU Corporation which have already carried out related construction supervision, the Izmit Bay Bridge project aims to contribute to high-quality social infrastructure using Japanese large-scale bridge technology.

Turkey is continuing the expansion of its highway network and future projects now being planned also include world-class suspension bridges such as the Dardanelles Strait Bridge and the 3rd Bosporus Bridge. Chodai would like to further develop the large-scale bridge technology which it has accumulated over the years and the company is now actively competing for new future projects.
