Koh Khsach Tonlea is a river island formed by the Bassac River in Saang District, Kandal Province, located approximately 30 km south of Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh (population approx. 2.4 million). It is a major agricultural production area for the country. However, there is currently no bridge connecting the island to the opposite shore, making transportation and logistics entirely dependent on ferries. Constraints related to weather and operating hours have become significant obstacles to the region's economic development.

To improve this situation, the Cambodian government planned this bridge construction project (total project cost of approximately JPY 3 billion, supported by the EIB) to connect Koh Khsach Tonlea with National Road No. 21, as part of the country's ASPIRE-AT program *2. Once the bridge is completed, it will enable the rapid supply of fresh produce to the Phnom Penh market, and the island is expected to develop into a major agricultural hub.

This project encompasses the construction of a bridge crossing the Bassac River and its approach roads. Currently, a Prestressed Concrete (PC) box girder bridge with a span of approximately 100 meters is planned. During the planning and design phases, we aim to deliver a bridge that ensures safe navigation for passing vessels while allowing smooth transit for large vehicles used for agricultural transport. Furthermore, we will formulate an optimal bridge plan that carefully considers and reflects the unique local natural environment and the characteristics of the Bassac River, which experiences annual water level fluctuations exceeding 5 meters, riverbank erosion, and scouring.

Throughout this project, Chodai will provide comprehensive support for the bridge's construction from the FS to the CS stages, while also actively engaging in technology transfer to Cambodian engineers. The project duration is 45 months from commencement (FS/DD: 15 months, CS: 30 months).

Chodai has accumulated valuable experience and expertise in bridge construction in Cambodia, most notably through the "Tsubasa Bridge" (opened in 2015, funded by JICA Grant Aid) located on the Southern Economic Corridor (National Road No. 1). By leveraging the technological capabilities we have acquired through our extensive track record, we are committed to the successful delivery of this project, contributing to the facilitation of logistics and the regional economic development of Cambodia.
